My understanding is that the X and i series are roughly equivalent, you might
even say identical provided the same waveforms, effects, and program
parameters are used. Although the i-series does not have a "combi" mode, it
can layer in Arr mode.
The Trinity is another story. It uses ACCESS (Advanced Combined Control
Synthesis System), and MOSS (Multi Oscillator Synthesis System) for sound
generation, and has 32 simultaneous voices (poly). I haven't heard it
yet in person, so I'll pass on whether it sounds better or not.
Since the ix300 was just released, it sounds doubtful that Korg is
abandoning the i-series line. Especially since Roland has its version
to compete with the i3 at a similar price.
The .pcg file formats for the X series (korg5 is their file identifier) and
the i-series (korg9 identifier) are similar at a block level. But their
structures are slightly different. (A basic block of program data, 168
bytes I think, is identical in both files, but the way they are arranged
is slightly different. You can load a korg5 .pcg file in an i-series, but it
will only see the first 64 programs, and the location of the user drum
programs is different. Korg5 treats them like any other program block,
while the korg5 file always includes them as the last two blocks in the file.
